New Pictures

Friday, May 05th, 2006

The Gallery has been updated with a bunch of pictures from my more recent past. I’ve got a ton more I’m going to upload once I straighten them all out. I just read in TUX magazine about a program called F-Spot. It is apparently a pretty good photo organization/editing program that runs on Linux and uses Gnome. I’m a KDE user, myself, but I’m willing to try anything out if it’s good enough.
Oh, and do me a favor. I’m currently trying to figure out why my web server sounds like a blender. So I moved the website over to another server. The box this is running on right now is pretty heavily utilized (running VMWare Server Beta). After I figure out how I’ve screwed up the webserver, I’ll put it back over there. But please be gentle for the time being. It’s delicate.

Old Friends

Nyki and I went out to dinner with some friends I used to work with about 5 years ago. You don’t really realize just how much you miss having an excellent work life that spilled over into your personal life. I just hope we didn’t scare off the people at the other tables…

Changing Names… seansmith.org!

Thursday, May 04th, 2006

A few years ago, I struck out on a mission to own my name on the top 3 TLDs (.org, .net, and .com). Well, I’m officially one step closer. About 2 weeks ago, I picked up seansmith.org thanks to GoDaddy’s DomainAlert (backordering) program. The deal was, though, that about 3 or 4 months ago, I noticed that the previous owner of seansmith.org had allowed their registration to lapse. In the hopes that I could pick it up, I signed up with DomainAlert. Little did I know that ICANN sucks royally, and have created various loopholes that allow registrars to hold onto lapsed domains for a few months. This allows them to potentially auction the domain, allow the previous registrant to pay an exorbitant sum to get control back, or other methods to bilk everyone out of their money. Apparently, however, seansmith.whatever isn’t a highly trafficed site (yet, hopefully), and it eventually lapsed and GoDaddy picked it up for me.

So, without further ado… I’ve renamed the site from .net to .org. This is probably the way I’ll leave it, even if the guy who has .com eventually gives up and relinquishes the domain. He’s got it through 2010 at this point, though :-(
